Get out of the office and onto the trails!

Experiential therapy in the outdoors

  • How I work.

I meet with clients for individual or small group sessions, typically for 2-3 hours per session and sessions can be weekly, every other week, or monthly. Our therapeutic and mentorship relationship is built around outdoor recreation (for now, specifically mountain biking). I will meet clients at trailheads where we will connect for a mountain bike ride and therapy that is adapted to each individual’s needs and goals. This may range from just getting to know each other with screen-free time in nature to in-depth therapy including learning and practicing interpersonal communication skills, goal setting, developing self-awareness, substance use counseling, and/or trauma healing.

  • Logistical Considerations.

I typically meet with students in the after school hours or during the day if students have free periods or a day off. If the client has their own bike, we can meet at a variety of local trailheads; if the client does not have a mountain bike, no problem! Tour of Nevada City has generously partnered with me to offer free access during sessions to rental bikes and helmets at the Outpost at Harmony Ridge (underneath and behind the Harmony Ridge Market). Clients also get a generous discount at Tour of Nevada City for any gear they may want or if they want to purchase their own bike. Parents are responsible for drop-offs and pick-ups if client does not drive.

  • Cost.

Rental bikes are free, thanks to the generosity of Tour of Nevada City bike shop! Therapy is $175 per hour for individual sessions and $250 per hour for groups of 2-5 students and parents can split the cost (e.g. for a group of 5, each family would pay $50 per hour). If a sliding scale is needed, we can discuss this option.

Each individual/family is responsible for additional expenses whether that be snacks, additional gear, or any treatments for potential injuries.

  • Flow of a session.

    1. Meet at a trailhead (Harmony Ridge if accessing free rentals from Tour of Nevada City Outpost), get bikes ready, and co-create a plan for the ride.

    2. General check-in while we ride (review of week, goals, family, self, friends, school, etc.)

    3. Enjoy the powerful impact of movement and connection in nature. Experience all the inherent benefits (empowerment, competency, healthy fun and risk taking, fresh air, exercise, acceptance, adaptation, etc.).

    4. Sit and engage in therapy during or after the ride (if and when appropriate to the client’s needs at that time).

    5. End with gratitude and goal setting for between sessions. Return bike to Tour of Nevada City Outpost and either be picked up or drive home.
